St. John's wort (Latin: Hypericum perforatum) is a medicinal plant belonging to the Hypericaceae family, which is used to improve the circulatory system and treat circulatory diseases, e.g. anemia. St. John's wort purifies the blood in the body and stops bleeding, it is also used for menstrual disorders. The plant has strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used orally for inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, stomach ulcers, liver and pancreas diseases, as well as externally for the treatment of various inflammations of the oral mucosa, e.g. stomatitis, purulent otitis, burns, infected wounds, abscesses. St. John's wort is also a well-known remedy for the treatment of depression. Recently, it has been used in Europe as an alternative to chemically synthesized antidepressants. St. John's wort drugs help with insomnia, tension, and various neuroses. St. John's wort is also used for pain, e.g. severe headaches and cramps.
